Under the Sea: from a Unity game jam to Three.js, and the deep-sea look

The story of the game that was born in 14 days, reached Steam in 2021 and got a new web version.

Under the Sea was born in a 14-day game jam, made in Unity, and was released on Steam in 2021. The idea: deep in the sea every light means more time to live, but some are the anglerfish’s bait.

Version 2.0

The current version was rebuilt in Three.js, the same engine we use for the studio’s other games, and runs in the browser, on Windows and on Android. The most visible change was the look: a deep blue sea instead of a washed-out cyan, with fog, white balance, bloom and vignette tuned.

  • +The first seconds changed: the play button goes straight into the level, and in the first two matches an on-screen tip (the Coach) teaches the basics.
  • +Missions and ranks: 3 active missions at a time, with an endless, editable list.
  • +At the end of a run, the play again button repeats the same mode, and there is a summary with the best combo, the deepest zone and more.
  • +Five languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Chinese.

The free Android version shows an ad between deaths, with a frequency limit and Google’s privacy consent (UMP). The game is on Steam, CrazyGames and itch.io, and you can play it right here in the browser.
