Rodents Chess: chess, checkers, ludo, puzzles and a roguelike journey
What started as a chess game with rodent pieces became a pack of five board games in 2.5D pixel art.
Rodents Chess started as a chess game on a cheese-and-chocolate board in the middle of a garden picnic: the White Rats against the Black Rats, with soldier rats as pawns, beavers as rooks, squirrels as knights and a Rat Princess as the queen. You rotate, tilt and zoom the board in 2.5D, and every capture is animated: the attacker strikes and the captured piece falls.
Five games in one
- +Chess: against the computer (easy, medium or hard) or with a friend, a 1 to 30 minute clock with increment, castling, en passant, promotion, stalemate, threefold repetition and the 50-move rule.
- +Checkers with the Brazilian rule: capturing is mandatory in the majority direction and the queen flies.
- +Ludo for 2 to 4 players, people or computer: take your little rats to the centre.
- +Puzzles: mate-in-1 and mate-in-2 problems and the Puzzle of the day.
- +Rat’s Journey: a chess roguelike where you cross the kingdom, recruit strange pieces and face the Cat King.
Everything has rankings, achievements, undo, resign and offer a draw, and the game speaks Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and Chinese. The AI engine is our own, and the sounds are synthesized.
Rodents Chess is paid and runs on Windows, on itch.io. There is also a free edition with ads for Android, which can be downloaded from the game’s own page. Version 0.2.1 improved the look on phones.
