JSRat Engine: how I build most of my games on top of Three.js
A custom engine with a level editor that exports the same game to the browser, Windows and Android.
Almost all of the studio’s games come from one place: the JSRat Engine, an engine built on top of Three.js. It grew out of the editor of one of my older games and became more general with each new game.
What it looks like inside
- +It is made of components: the engine handles the world, camera, screens and saving, and each type of game plugs in as a component (a chess game, a match-3, an action RPG, a 3D platformer, a bubble shooter).
- +It has a level editor, and the editor never goes into the exported game.
- +Screens (title, pause, level complete) are built from elements and translated into five languages.
- +A lot of things come from generators: scripts that create the pixel art, sounds and levels, and that can be re-run when something changes.
One game, three places
The same game ships as a single HTML file for the browser (that is what runs here on the site), as a Windows program and as an Android app. There are also ready-made packages for portals such as CrazyGames, Y8 and GamePix. Each game has its version number in a config file, and that is what shows in the menu and in the packages.
A few games made this way: Colors of Me, Sorriso Brilhante and As Aventuras do Senhor Minhoco, which show the variety well, from a puzzle platformer to a dentist simulator and a playable comic.
